Hospitable Transitions: Building New Systems From the Ground Up
09/03/2026 - 16:10
The leisure, tourism and hospitality (LTH) sector is at a crossroads. Which way will we go? The sector is one of the world’s largest employers and touches the lives of billions. Yet the systems within which it operates remain fundamentally broken. Overtourism erodes communities. Carbon emissions keep rising. Host populations lose public space, affordable housing and quality of life. Biodiversity declines. And despite growing awareness, the sector remains locked into a model built on limitless growth, upscaling and short-term returns; a pathway with no viable future.
At the same time, pioneers across the sector are already showing that things can be different. Hotels that operate climate-neutrally. Destinations that put community well-being first. Events designed around circularity. Tourism experiences that restore rather than extract. These initiatives exist but they are scattered, often invisible, and rarely supported by the systems around them. This is where Hospitable Transitions comes in.
