'Don't judge a book by it's cover'

The 2nd and 3rd year students of our Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies, along with the Premaster Leisure & Tourism Studies students, went on a day field trip during their class called 'Leisure & Placemaking'. They visited the Galvanitas Fabriek in Oosterhout.

The Galvanitas Fabriek is a location that used to be a chair factory for education institutes. However, nowadays, the factory is home to local artists, De Cultuurmakerij, a brewery, and some food and beverage services (De Houthallen). As such, a placemaking process has already been put into place.

From a functionless factory, the 'Galvanitas Fabriek' is now aiming at becoming a hotspot for youth with a focus on social impacts and community value.

Student Carmina Tarean:
'Visiting Galvanitas Fabriek was a really nice way to actually see how a forgotten factory is being brought back to life. Once we stood outside the buildings, everything seemed dull and grey, but once we entered the Houthallen we were all surprised by what is behind the doors: a space that is used for creative and cultural purposes. 'Don't judge a book by its cover' is the right quotation for our visit.'

Thanks to Robin Davidse (project developer) of Schonck, Schul & Compagnie for sharing his insights in the placemaking process and asking our students for suggestions about the role leisure can play in the development of the Galvanitas community.
