Students of our specialisation Social Innovation participate in so-called Performatory Inspiration Talks. In their talk, students present a personal topic that they further explored. Lieke Smulders tells more about adventure sports and how she experienced speaking in front of a group of people.

“My talk was about connection with nature in relation to adventure sports. I talked about how adventures can change your perception of yourself, others and the world around you.

This topic is very personal for me. A few years ago I went on vacation and tried the sport canyoning for the very first time. Something changed me that day, I felt different. I couldn't explain how but I just knew at that moment that adventure is something very special and that I should do it more often.

Feeling powerful
After a history of surgeries, I didn't have much trust in my body but when I started canyoning I learned how to gain that trust again. I didn't have control of what would happen, nature was. The only thing I was in control of was my emotions and that changed something inside of me, it felt so powerful that that is why I chose this topic to research.

I learned how to put my feelings into words on this personal expedition and to learn about different perspectives.

Personal
Presenting in front of a group was very scary at first, that is because my topic was very personal and with that all of the things people said about my topic also felt personal. But I turned that off and actually had a lot of fun during my talk and said what I wanted to say during it.

It is very inspirational to see people share something they deeply care about and they often let you see different sides of stories you had never heard.”
