Regenerative Placemaking in the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam

From the canals of Amsterdam to the windmills of Zaanse Schans, the beaches of the North Sea to the reclaimed polders, the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most attractive and diverse places to live and visit. Visitor numbers, but also residents and businesses are expected to keep growing in the upcoming years, leading to overtourism in places like Amsterdam city centre, but also recreational pressure on green spaces for residents. If we want tourism and leisure to contribute as much as possible to societal challenges and well-being within the region, we must understand that these challenges are as diverse as the region itself. The future of tourism in the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam depends on protecting its cultural identity, maintaining a good quality of life for residents, and giving people a voice in shaping tourism’s direction. This is a place-based approach where tourism and leisure are seen as means to create a healthy living environment where people, plants and animals thrive.
